What are standards?
You will be hearing your child talk about standards in their classroom. What are standards? The State of Georgia has adopted Performance Standards as the curriculum for the schools. These Standards give us a goal or level of performance to expect of all children. In order to focus on the learning needed to meet the standards, children are being shown the standards in the classroom, so they will know the expectation of learning that is required of them. In K-2 these are wrtitten as I can staements ( I can recognize the sounds of the letters of the alphabet. or I can count to 100.) Grade 3-5 we show them the actual standard and then focus on essential questions, which we call EQ's. A Science EQ might be "Why do somethings float and others sink? You can find the Georgia Performance Standards at the State Board of Education website or your child's teacher can share them with you.
